Why we selected it
Chosen for Kate Winslet's fragile, inward performance and a summer heat the film renders almost tangible.
Synopsis
Adele, a divorced mother withdrawn from the world, rarely leaves the house; her thirteen-year-old son Henry has quietly become her caretaker. On a trip to the store they are made to drive home a wounded stranger, Frank, who has escaped from prison. Across five humid days he repairs the house, teaches Henry to throw a ball and bake a pie, and something like a family takes shape under the threat of discovery. Adapted from Joyce Maynard's novel, the film is narrated from the son's later vantage.
