Why we selected it
Included for its sheer production design and DiCaprio's Gatsby — a performance of hope worn as a costume.
Synopsis
In the summer of 1922, Nick Carraway rents a cottage on Long Island beside the mansion of Jay Gatsby, whose parties draw half of New York. Nick's cousin Daisy lives across the water with her husband Tom, and Gatsby's interest in her soon becomes the centre of everything. Baz Luhrmann stages Fitzgerald's novel as spectacle — swirling cameras, anachronistic music, colour pushed to excess — so that the emptiness beneath the glamour feels all the starker.
